AI Can’t Write Your Story
No surprise here – as AI becomes more common, I’m seeing more and more resumes that feel like they were created by a distracted robot. And let’s be honest, that’s not going to help anyone stand out in the job market.
Creating a resume is about more than filling in blanks. It’s a process of self-reflection. Sure, templates can be helpful and industry jargon is necessary, but your resume should tell a cohesive story – one that highlights where you’ve been, where you’re headed and why you’re the perfect fit for the job you want.
While AI is a great tool, it simply can’t do the work for you. Here’s why:
AI doesn’t know your story. It can’t capture the unique aspects of your career journey, the projects that made you proud or what truly made your accomplishments stand out.
AI misses the soft skills. AI doesn’t know the nuances of your leadership style, how your managers view your work or what makes you a great teammate. These subtleties are often what separate you from the competition.
AI doesn’t reflect your authenticity. A generic resume – like the ones AI spits out after you dump in a job description – will not highlight what truly makes you a standout candidate.
AI is a helpful tool, but it shouldn’t do all the heavy lifting. Here’s how to use it to enhance your resume:
Start with AI for suggestions. Let AI offer tips or edits but the final product should be yours. After all, no one knows you better than you know yourself.
Let AI help with structure, but bring the heart.Templates and keywords can be helpful but don’t rely solely on them. AI can help with formatting, but the content should come from your personal experience and perspective.
Use AI for editing, not writing. Once you’ve written your resume with your personal touch, let AI help with proofreading or suggesting improvements. But make sure you’re in control of your narrative.
The process of self-reflection isn’t just for your resume – it’ll also help prepare you for interviews. Employers want to know more than just your job titles. They want to understand your journey, your unique skills and why you’re the perfect fit for the role. AI can’t prepare you for that kind of nuanced conversation because it doesn’t know the personal stories behind your accomplishments or how to help you connect the dots between your experience and the role.
This is where I come in. I can help you dig deeper into your career narrative, highlight your strengths, and provide coaching on how to speak confidently to what makes you a standout candidate. Together we can make sure you’re not only prepared with the right answers but also able to communicate them in a way that resonates with employers. Let’s make sure your story gets the attention it deserves.
